I work nights under hospital lights. Then I come home and shower under one.
I'm a nurse. Nine years of it, mostly on lates, and enough night shifts to know exactly what a ward looks like at three in the morning — flat white light, no shadows, nothing in the room that tells your body what time it is. That's the point of it. You're not meant to wind down at work.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to notice I get home at half ten and shower under the same thing. Four white spots in the ceiling, pointing straight down, straight into my eyes.
I'd come out more awake than I went in. Then lie there with my brain still going. I put it down to the shifts. Everyone on shifts puts everything down to the shifts.
It wasn't the shifts. I thought I was bad at sleeping. I was just bad at ending the day — and the last twenty minutes of it were doing most of the damage.
Before I go on — this is a specific problem and it isn't everyone's. It's yours if:
- You shower at night, not in the morning.
- The bathroom is the brightest room in your home, and you never chose that.
- You get into bed and your head carries on without you.
- You've tried just turning the light off. You lasted about four nights.
If you shower in the morning and sleep like a rock, none of this applies to you and I'd close the tab.

Every UK bathroom. Same bulb. Nobody asked for it.
Fine at 7am. Wrong for the last thing you do before bed.
Nobody picked that bulb. It came with the flat. It's there to make a small room look bright in an estate agent's photo. You've showered under it ever since. It is, in effect, a sunrise. The last one of your day, ten minutes before bed.
Same bathroom. One switch.
“Wanted something that would give me enough light without the harsh brightness of the ceiling light.”
Your body doesn't read brightness. It reads sunsets.
Your body has read sunsets for two hundred thousand years. It has read a ceiling bulb for about a hundred.
A sunset is three things at once. Miss one and your body doesn't buy it.
- Warm, not white.Deep amber, around 2000K. No blue in it at all. Blue is the part daylight has most of, and it's the part your body reads as morning.
- Low, not overhead.Light coming from below eye level reads as evening. Light from the ceiling reads as noon, however far you turn it down.
- Dim enough to see by, not dark.Enough to shower by, not enough to wake you up. If you can't find the shampoo, you won't do it twice.
Warm, low, and dim but not dark. All three together. Sunset light.
So "just turn it off" fails. You can't see, and dark isn't relaxing. It's just dark.
And "just dim it" fails too. Brightness isn't the variable — colour and height are. A dimmer changes how much light there is. It doesn't change what colour it is, or where it's coming from.
“Tired of the bright bathroom light. Turn off the cold overhead lights in your bathroom and use this instead — it's leagues better.”

You've already tried most of this. So have I.
None of it was daft. Every one of them was aimed at the right thing. They each miss one of the three.
- CandlesRight colour, right height. But you can't take a flame into the shower, and it's gone in an hour.
- The dimmer switchSame cold bulb, turned down. Still overhead. Still reads as midday.
- The cheap lamp off AmazonWhite LED, thin plastic, dead in a month, and it was never built for steam.
- Turning the big light offClosest anyone gets. Also the one you stop doing after four nights.
"Can't I just shower in the dark?"
You can. It's a power cut, not a ritual.
Pitch black
- Can't find the shampoo
- Feels like a power cut
- Nothing to look at
Warm light in steam
- Enough light to feel safe
- The steam glows
- You actually keep doing it
You weren't wrong. You just never had the right light.
“All this time I've been carrying my little desk lamp to the tub, not knowing this existed. This is so much better. And it's water resistant, so I don't have to worry about ruining it.”
One of the girls on nights had one on her shower shelf.
That's how I found it. It's called Hush Ember. A small warm lamp that sits on the shelf. Warm light, below eye level, dim enough to see by. That's the whole brief. It doesn't do anything else, and I've come round to liking that about it.
It arrives charged. Put it down, turn the big light off, get in. That's the install. Mine lives on the shower shelf; my mum stands hers on the windowsill over the bath. Flat or house, rented or owned, the bulb in the ceiling is the same everywhere.
- IP44 splash-proof. It lives in the shower, not next to it.
- Up to 8 hours a charge. A fortnight or so of showers between charges.
- USB-C. Charges like your phone.
- No wiring, nothing to fit. Renters welcome.
- No app, no subscription, nothing to replace.
“I love this thing!!! Most "water proof" lights are just not worth it but this one is.”

Same bathroom, three nights running.
I took these on my phone because my sister didn't believe the dimmer thing. Look at the middle one. That's the big light turned right down, and it's still the wrong colour and still coming from the ceiling.

Brightness was never the variable. That's the whole thing in three pictures.
“The moment I turned it on and took the shade off, I was struck by how calming it was.”
What people say once they've lived with it.
“We love it and never shower or bathe without it.”
“I put mine in my shower so I don't have to use the bigger light.”
“This was an item I never knew I needed. I love using it during my nightly shower to help unwind. I turn off all other lights and just use the lamp to light up my bathroom.”
“A lamp in the shower! Unexpected and gorgeous. Adds so much warmth, and so inviting.”
“I had never heard of a shower lamp before. A dim light helps me relax, but I never knew there was one made for the shower.”
“Great addition to my shelf in my shower. Love having more of a spa vibe while I shower.”
“I've been using this lamp every day since it was delivered. It charges well and lasts a long time.”
“Instagram sold me this, and it was one of those rare occasions where I was thrilled with the outcome. Now I'm buying more of them.”
Reviews from hushlights.com customers.
The shower is night one. The rule is: big light off after 8.
Big light off, Ember on, and at half ten the room stops feeling like a bathroom. It feels like the day actually ended. Mine goes off at eight now whether I'm in there or not — and the rest of the flat has slowly followed.
First night I noticed nothing. Third night I got into bed and realised I wasn't braced for anything. That's the whole review, really.
“This is such a cute lamp. We put it in our shower as my husband likes to shower with dim lights at night, so it works perfectly.”

- A lamp in the shower — is that not asking for trouble?
- There's no plug and no wiring. It's a sealed rechargeable unit, IP44 rated for steam and splashes, and it charges by USB-C away from the water. Put it on the shelf or the windowsill, not directly under the shower head — it's rated for splashes and steam, not for standing in the jet.
- How long before it needs charging?
- Up to eight hours of light per charge. At fifteen minutes a night that's a fortnight or so of showers, so you'll plug it in about as often as you charge a toothbrush.
- Is there anything else to buy?
- No. No app, no subscription, no bulbs, nothing to replace. You buy the lamp once.
- What if my bathroom's tiny, or I've only got a bath?
- It needs somewhere to sit, and that's the only requirement. Shower shelf, windowsill, the edge of the bath, the cistern. Mine's on a shelf; my mum's is on a windowsill above the bath.
“The light is bright enough for a bathroom and much safer than using candles.”
— Nicola R.
Tonight you'll shower under the big light again.
Same four bulbs. Same hour of lying there afterwards. Tomorrow you'll say the same thing about being tired.
Or you won't.
